The Texas Zoo

In 1957, Victoria’s mayor, W.R. McCright, received an African lioness as a donation from local businessman James L. Yates. The gift prompted McCright to spearhead the development of a local zoo for the Victoria area. From these humble origins grew a collection of both native Texas animals and exotic species from around the world. The Texas Zoo “connects people with wildlife from Texas and the rest of the world; inspires caring for nature; and advances conservation through education, recreation, science and action. ”
